CLASS A DRIVER WANTED - LOGAN AIRPORT

MASSPORT

  • The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is currently accepting bids for the position of Heavy Equipment Operator (Bargaining Unit, Local Union No. 25) at Logan International Airport.The Heavy Equipment Operator operates machinery at Logan International Airport and surrounding area.
  • ESSENTIAL TASKS OF THE JOB Operates heavy equipment as directed.
  • 1. Drives plows, street sweepers, loaders, backhoe, chemical trucks, bus, sewer cleaner, high lift, de-icing equipment, fork lift and grass cutter.
  • 2. Operates paint machine, blowers, sweepers and jack hammer.
  • 3. Operates and performs preventative maintenance on equipment stationed inside as directed. Cleans and maintains streets, airfield and performs landscaping tasks.
  • 1. Cuts grass with manual lawn mower. Trims hedges, plants, flowers, shrubs and trees. Pulls weeds and sprays different types of pesticides (Weed Killer, Insecticide).
  • 2. Removes trash and debris on and around the airfield.
  • 3. Paints streets and runways, sweeps sidewalks.
  • 4. Assists in performing minor repairs on buildings, signs, roads, parking lots and machinery as directed.
  • 5. Moves items weighing up to 50 lbs, including but not limited to: bags of rubbish, pallets and rocks, sand, mulch, snow and other debris, furniture.
  • 6. Maintains log on equipment used, and performs preventative maintenance as needed and directed. Performs general maintenance duties as they arise, and as directed.
  • 1. Repairs underground water lines and sewers.
  • 2. Repairs fire hydrants, valves, seals as directed.
  • 3. Assists in minor repairs, painting of structures, and other basic maintenance of airport structures. 2 Responds to emergency situations according to airport procedures, airport emergency codes and as directed. Performs other duties as needed.
  • SECONDARY JOB TASKS Performs as member of Bird Control team when necessary.
  • 1. Operates firearms to startle birds in order to minimize disturbances on the airfield.
  • 2. Reports on sightings/riddance of birds including but not limited to: size, type, time, area, number, flocks. Reports are given to operations, FAA, and the USDA Wildlife Biologist consultant.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education Level Ability to read; basic oral, written and mathematical skills. Includes manual skills and the ability to operate machinery. Experience in Field/Related Field 5 years’ airport related experience strongly preferred.

UNIQUE EXPERTISE/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS

  • 1. Massachusetts CDL "A" and hoisting license, required.
  • 2. Ability to obtain firearm identification card.
  • 3. Ability to pass Massport security clearance and obtain a Massport Security Badge.
  • 4. Ability to pass airfield driving test and obtain Aerodrome Ramp, Apron, and Airfield License.
  • 5. Ability to pass NIDA urine screening and breath alcohol test in compliance with Massport CDL policy.
  • 6. Ability to pass Massport drug test and background check.

WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental Parameters Ability to work in an airport environment with conditions which may include; fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, and dusts as well as Decibels in the range of 65-100. Ability to work on the airfield in all weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, dry, and wet). Ability to work heights on top of buildings. Ability to work with grass and weeds. Physical Demands 3 Strength: Ability to lift/move items weighing up to 70 lbs. Type: Ability to walk at least three hours a day and distances of two miles. Ability to bend, stoop and crawl. Good hearing to monitor radio equipment on the airfield and streets. Clarity of vision beyond 20 feet to see distances being traveled by equipment being operated, and approaching aircraft. Ability to discriminate colors for airfield lights.

WORK SCHEDULE 40-hour workweek with the ability to work any shift. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and overtime in emergency conditions as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED 2-way radio, computerized de-icing program, plow, street sweeper, paint machine, blowers, sweepers, loaders, back hoe, chemical trucks, bus, sewer cleaner, high lift, fork lift, grass cutter, jack hammer, shotgun, manual lawn mower, weed whacker, hedge trimmer, shovel, hand tools and other MPA equipment
