Class A Driver
Hours/Week Category: Regular Full Time
Reports to Transporation Supervisor
Purpose:
A GBFB (The Greater Boston Food Bank) driver is responsible for delivering food to agencies and picking up food from supplier. GBFB drivers actively load and unload their vehicles and have extensive internal and on-site interaction with agencies, suppliers, volunteers, and clients. The daily routes include multiple stops primarily intrastate. This role requires extensive personal interaction with internal and external customers, verifying documentation and loads, and safely transporting food to and from designated locations. GBFB Drivers are required to follow the letter and spirit of all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including maintenance of duty status records and pre- and post-trip vehicle safety inspections.
Responsibilities:
· Operating both CDL Class A & B trucks, or the cargo van, ensuring a safe and timely pick-up and delivery of product.
· Upon loading, inspecting all products, verifying quantities and expiration dates according to SOPs, and informing the appropriate Supervisor of any issues found.
· Working independently, according to an assigned schedule, while assessing and responding to customer needs and to updated / changing plans, keeping the transportation team leader informed.
· Documenting travel, time worked, breaks, etc. via electronic logging methods.
· Maintaining vehicles daily (cleaning, keeping maintenance records)
· Safely operating and maintaining pallet jack power equipment according to GBFB policy.
· Adhering to all food safety requirements according to Serv-Safe, Feeding America and ensuring American Institute of (Baking) AIB standards are maintained.
· Complying with all GBFB, Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and other regulatory authority rules and regulations.
Skills:
· Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to use mobile electronic devices to communicate and document travel, time worked, etc.
· Must have the skill set to safely execute multiple deliveries and pickups on a daily basis utilizing different types of vehicles.
· Must possess sound business acumen and the ability to establish credibility, trust and partnership at all levels of the organization.
· Must be detail oriented and responsible
· Have a high level of independence while working effectively and collaboratively with a diverse population.
· Work creatively, showing innovation and ability to think out-of- the-box in problem-solving, organizational diagnosis and solution generation.
· Have excellent organization, time-management, and task-management skills to maneuver in a very fast paced and diverse environment.
· Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact well with internal and external customers.
Qualifications:
· A current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and DMV- certified documentation of an excellent driving record.
· 5 years or more of continuous Class A & B CDL driving experience, with an emphasis on vehicle lift gate and vehicle refrigeration.
· High School diploma or GED or at least 2 more years of experience as described above in lieu of diploma or GED
· Electric pallet jack experience is a requirement with forklift experience with a plus.
· Experience working with a refrigerated truck is a plus.
· Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
· Must be able to pass pre-employment background checks and DOT drug and alcohol tests.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
· Fast pace physically strenuous with continual lifting and lowering of inventory up to 100 pounds on a daily basis
· Driver must ensure all activities are completed in a safe and efficient way
· Exposure to varied temperatures in warehouse
· Exposure to weather extreme heat and cold
· Ability to drive up to 11 hours and work 14 hours
